FEEDING |
|
The smaller dolphins, such as the
Bottlenose Dolphin, eat smaller fish like smelts,
squid, mullet, and crustaceans. They usually feed at night. How do they catch food? The
Bottlenose Dolphins can sometimes be seen "fish whacking." They hit the fish up
into the air with
their tails, which stuns them. Then when the fish fall back towards the water, the
dolphins can
catch them with no trouble at all. Atlantic Spotted Dolphins feel around in the sand for
small fish
and crabs with their powerful sonar. Yet, some dolphins just prefer to dive through a
school of
fish with their mouths open.
